What does buck and boost do for an AVR UPS?

The Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR) in the UPS systems adjusts the incoming AC voltage to stabilize the output power to connected equipment.

What is Boost?
It’s the function that increases voltages when the power of the UPS approaches the low voltage threshold from the AVR function.

What is Buck?
Buck lowers the voltage of a UPS when the input power gets closer to the high voltage threshold.

What does the Wiring-Fault Indicator light mean?

What is the Wiring-Fault Indicator?

The LED indicator will illuminate red to warn the user that a wiring problem exists, such as bad ground, missing ground or reversed wiring.

What is bad ground?

If your CyberPower unit shorts out or there is a surge/spike in power, it can become a fire hazard by not properly grounding the wire to the earth ground that is connected to your house.

What is missing ground?

A missing ground can cause electrical shock.

What is reversed wiring?

This is caused by the hot and neutral wires being reversed in the wall outlet.

Solutions to try and diagnose the problem:

Try connecting the CyberPower unit into another outlet. If the wiring-fault light indicator is still illuminated contact an electrician to correct the problem with the faulty wall outlet.

If the indicator is illuminated red

Applies to CyberPower products:
Smart App Sinewave, Smart App LCD, PFC Sinewave, Intelligent LCD, AVR, PC Battery Backup, TAA Compliant UPS.

Note: some of the products in their series lines will not come equipped with the wiring-fault indicator light

What are the red reset buttons on the back of my UPS for?

Those are circuit breakers. If one of the circuits were to be tripped, that button would be sticking out significantly farther than normal and would need to be pushed back in to reset the circuit.

What is the USB/Serial port for?

The USB/Serial ports allow you to connect your UPS system to a computer and access additional power management features using our PowerPanel Business software. Note: PowerPanel Business must be installed on the connected computer. View the Downloads tab for additional information.

Critical Load and Non-Critical Load Outlets

“Critical Load” (CL) tends to refer to desktop computers or servers which require safe shutdown during the event of power failure. “Non-Critical Load” outlets refers to redundant equipment such as monitors or other peripherals and should be connected to the NCL outlets to be powered off early in order to save additional battery runtime for the “Critical Load” to safely shutdown. Note that the “Non-Critical Load” NCL outlets are available on select UPS models.

Should the cooling fan on my CyberPower UPS be running at all times?

The internal cooling fan will only run when it is required. CyberPower UPS systems utilize an internal thermometer which activates the fan when the temperature exceeds a certain threshold. When the UPS is running idle (not using battery power), it is completely normal for the fan to not be running. The exception is with Online units, models that begin with “OL”. Their cooling fans will run ALL the time.

Do I have to have the UPS turned on in order for it to charge?

The UPS will charge the battery whether the unit is turned on or turned off.

How do I dispose of my UPS?

CyberPower Systems encourages environmentally sound methods for disposal and recycling of its UPS products. Please dispose of and/or recycle your UPS and batteries in accordance to the local regulations of your state.

What warnings are associated with the California Proposition 65 “Prop 65” requirements?

A UPS contains batteries that have battery posts, terminals and related accessories that contain lead and/or lead compounds as well as other chemicals known to the state of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm.

Can I use a different software package to manage my UPS?

CyberPower UPS systems will not work with other UPS manufacturers’ software, but many models do support OS supplied management (e.g. Vista, XP, OS X).

What operating systems support USB connectivity with CyberPower UPS units?

The USB port can be used with Windows, 2000, XP, Server 2003, Vista, 7, and Server 2008.

Why does my UPS beep twice when I turn it on?

This is normal operation of the UPS. All CyberPower units perform a self-test routine when they are turned on.
